Greg spends his winters in Slab City, but not the summer. It’s too damn hot! Greg knew Leonard Knight personally and told me of Knight’s cats that are looked after at the artist’s request and roam Salvation Mountain as royal sovereigns of their domain.
Greg seemed genuinely happy to be playing his own part in preserving Knight’s legacy. “It just goes to show you what one man with singular vision and determination can do.” he told me, as I was getting ready to hit the road again, direction Phoenix. That’s when Greg mentioned I should visit East Jesus as well, before I go.
“Excuse me?” I said. “What Jesus?”
“East Jesus,” Greg repeated and went on to explain that it’s another art installation just down the road in Slab City. “You can actually touch and tinker with the art,” he said.
Hmmm. I was already a little behind schedule. I wanted to get to Phoenix to meet an old and dear friend that afternoon. But the lure of another eccentric art project in such close proximity — only five minutes away by car — proved too strong to resist.
“Okay, I’ll make it quick,” I thought.
Please join me for my next blog post on Slab City’s East Jesus! Thanks for accompanying me on this ride to southeast Cali! And what do you think? Is Salvation Mountain a place you’d like to visit?
